Mona was a common Italian contraction of madonna, meaning my lady, the equivalent of the English Madam or It is of Irish and Gaelic origin, and its meaning is 'noble'. Names that could be shortened to Mona - Desdemona and Ramona are a couple that I can think of |

Found this.. The girl's name Mona \m(o)-na\ is pronounced MOH-nah. It is of Irish and Gaelic origin, and its meaning is 'noble, aristocratic'. Also an Italian short form of Madonna. The 'Mona Lisa', a portrait painted by Leonardo da Vinci, has inspired name blends. The name spread from Ireland in the mid 19th century. Mona has 6 variant forms: Moina, Monah, Monalisa, Monalissa, Monna and Moyna. For more information, see also the related name Ramona. Marion |

Does anyone have any ideas what Mona may be short for? I have a couple of instances of it being a name in its own right but wondered about it being short for something as well. Thanks Maureen |
