Hi Margaret! I still find it amazing that you and I made contact by accident on this board - a million to one chance.

Hi Paul! I'm still keeping my eye open for your missing Catherine Stewart.(She who my husband's rotten Tilton cousin married and then deserted) We'll find her yet. Margaret

My Stewarts arrived in Ontario in 1882. Would you have access to any of their records?

Margaret, I knew bits and pieces of the history - but never put it all together. Thank you - as well as finding my ancestors, it's very interesting to find other facts! Thank you.

Thank you, Liz. Isn't it frustrating not to know the exact spelling? A perfectionist (me) shouldn't be doing family research. ;)

Actually, Lisa, the original spelling of the name was Stewart until Mary, Queen of Scots came along. Her surname was Stewart but she was educated in France where they didn't have the letter W in their alphabet in those days. Hence she spelled her name Stuart in the French way. The rest is history. Thank you, OC. Oddly enough, most of my findings have resulted in correct spellings - perhaps its because the people lived in their districts so long that others knew them - or just luck. Having said that, the same kind lady who found the Stuarts also found my Mumford family, listed as Maonford. I have run across so few errors with my surnames that I was worried about the Stuart's. Thank you for easing my mind. :)

Yup, Matthews/Mathews/Mathers (on one census). I'm still not sure whether one T or 2 was the original spelling of Matthews. I guess when/if I get further back it will all become clear. It seems to go through Phases though.

Lisa Every surname in my tree has been spelled 'wrongly' at some time, even my Green family - Grene, Green and Grace, lol. I too have Stuart/Stewart in my tree and they wander between the two spellings so often that I take no notice, and automatically search for both spellings. There is no right or wrong spelling for most surnames. Standardised spelling of surnames only started with the 1875 Education Act - before that, it was written how it sounded, or how the scribe thought it sounded. My surname is a simple one, with four letters. Yet I have received letters addressed to me with at least 13 different variations of this spelling. If they cannot get it right today, then they certainly couldnt get it right yesterday! OC

A very kind person has found a lot of information about my Stuart ancestors in Canada during the 1800's. However quite a few of the records show the Stewart spelling. I'm now starting to wonder if the spelling was originally Stewart! I know (some) people had difficulty spelling things, but I'm surprised to see so many instances where Stewart is written down. Have you had surnames that were usually spelled 'wrong?'
