Info from GENUKI site Church Records Church of England Records. Birtley, St Giles: Records of baptisms 1730-1991, marriages 1730-1976 and burials 1728-1993 are available at Northumberland Collections Service. Bishops' Transcripts for the period 1769-1834 are deposited at Durham University Library Archives and Special Collections, Palace Green, Durham City. The International Genealogical Index (I.G.I.) includes baptisms 1728-1875 and marriages 1730-1877 for this parish, but it is not included in Boyd's Marriage Index. Hi - I had a message from a contact in Canada who said that he would have to give up on one line of research as the church no longer existed! He was very happy when I pointed out that I could look up the parish records for him at my County Records Office and duly found the info. for him. Jack All church registers which have been completed now have to, by law, be deposited in an archive which is capable of maintaining an even temperature and controlled humidity. Some - a very few - churches are able to provide these conditions, but the great majority are not able to, and the registers are therefore deposited with the County Records Office. (or, very occasionally, the mother church or cathedral) I would start by looking for the registers in the County Records Office. OC

The only church I can find in Birtley with a search on Google is St. John the Evangelist, Birtley Lane, Birtley, Tyne and Wear. Maybe someone there would know about any older churches that used to be in Birtley. Kath. x

Hi, I know the church was in Birtley Co Durham, Would have to look up the name. I know it used to exist because of talking to my mother but she has a terrible memory. Just wondered what would have happened to the marriage register for example. Sorry to be thick. Regards Jack

Depends.... C of E, a church which just closed down and didnt transfer its congregation somewhere else en masse - probably the County Records Office. Other denominations - probably CRO, but maybe not. When and where???? OC
