what clues does the 1861 census hold? when was first childborn? |

First child born Nov 1853. 1861 is a little tricky, mother and son are listed along with another 'child' (born in Surrey) in the Hungerford Union Workhouse. Father is untracable as yet on the 1861. 1851 from what I can see are living apart. George born c1828 Lambourn, Mary Ann either 1822 or 1829 (according to 1861 and 1871). Incidentally, both parents 'disappear after the 1871 - where they were living in Swindon. Have reference numbers if you want to take a look at the records. Thanks. x |

Hi Karen I've had a look around the IGI and freebmd and can't find the marriage...maybe they didn't get married...sounds like life was really difficult for them. Have you got the birth cert for any of the children? Joan |

I have a birth certificate for William - their eldest child and my ancestor. I am learning to take things with a pinch of salt that is listed on the certificates, but she is listed as 'Mary Ann Miles, formerly Jones'. |

Hi Angela - thanks for clearing that part of the mystery up! I cant access the originals at work - our lovely computers block them, I can only view the transcribed pages, which is fairly limiting... |
