No, I think I might be confusing you a little. The woman in question is Jane (or whatever her name is) Crombie, maiden name Glover, also put down as wilson.( The marriage cert of her son also states her name as Crombie, maiden name Wilson)` The informant on her son's death (her son was called Thomas Crombie) was Thomas' son, Alexander. I have looked for both Jane/Robina Glover's birth and death, but have so far found nothing. Nor can I find her marriage cert to Richard Crombie. Im guessing she was born about 1770 so I assume she must have died before 1855, when death registration was first recorded. I have also looked for a marriage between a glover and a wilson, but again, have found nothing.

Just making sure I'm understanding this correctly - the son's surname is Glover? So we know there should be a marriage between a Mr Glover and a Jane (or whatever her name really was). When the son married he stated his mother was Binnie Wilson. When he died, years later, his mother was informant and signed as Jane Glover? Ok, could it be that after his father died, his mum at some point married a Mr Wilson under an alias name, so she became a Wilson and was that when her son married. Then her 2nd hubby could have died (or they separated) and she reverted back to her original married name of Glover? Or was Wilson his mum's maiden name perhaps? So many ifs, buts and whys ... Have you searched for her death yet? Wondering if it might shed more light on the matter . Athena

I suppose its possible. Her name on her daughter and son's death certs in 1866 and 1870 is Glover, its the same son's marriage in 1857 that says Wilson though. The thing that makes me think its got to be the same woman is that the son and daughter that im talking about both lived at the same address from the first census til they died. I originally found the address as another of Ms Glover's daughter's had died and the informant was her sister at this address.

Hi - I have a 3x grt grandmother who seemed to change her name year by year, and not just her first name either, she often changed her maiden name, too! She was baptised as Catherine Sullivan but used various aliases such as Caroline Lynch, Catherine Lynch, Catherine Finch, Catherine Fincham! For about a year I was convinced my 3xgrt grandad was a bigamist several times over! But after thorough investigation it turned out to be just one woman all along. So, yes, it seems that some of our ancestors did use alias names for whatever reason. Going back to your Binnie Wilson - could 'Wilson' have been her second married name perhaps? Athena

I would imagine Binnie is a diminutive of Robina.........but that doesn't equate very well with Jane! I don't envy you, trying to untangle it......... Reg

To make matters worse, I have tracked what I believe to be Ms Glover's son down. His death cert states his mother as Jane Glover, his marriage cert states her as Binnie Wilson!!! Its the same man (same address (he lived and died there) same wife). I think im gonna scream!!!!!!

I have one lady whose name on census records alternates between Christine and Annie, so anything is possible, I suppose. Reg

I had what I thought was a break-through last night when I discovered two more of my Crombie's. However, when I looked them up, the mother's christian name seems to vary a lot. I had thought her name was Robina Glover, yet on several different IGI (extracted, not submitted) entries I have found what I believe to be her children, and also a death cert, I have found her as a Jane, Isobell, and Christina as well as Robina (maiden name always the same, father always the same. This is in the late 1700's to early 1800's. Im pretty sure this is the same couple as the dates, ages and area all add up, its just this one thing. Has anyone else ever come accross this? I can't find a birth or marriage cert for her, and believe she died before 1855. (This is in Scotland)
