Does anyone know of the existence or thought of setting up a website along the lines of a wikipedia style with all the useful information that people have been submitting to this site being centrally collected in a user updatable database. I know Genuki gives useful information regarding counties/parishes but isn't really a tips site I wish I could set one up myself but have absolutely no experience of wiki style interfaces. I wouldn't suggest it to Genes as I'm sure they would mess about with it and muck it up. The external links section of Wikipedia would also be a handy feature and is not really tolerated on Genes. What does everyone think of this?

The biggest difficulty would be a server with sufficient bandwidth I think. However an inquiry to Wiki might give you the answer but you must be prepared for advertising to pay for it. I have the impression that ancestry pays for quite a few sites such as cemetery look-ups. Clive

Yes, I do know of a site which has already done this. You could suggest it to GR. OC

I think you can create your own Wikipedia page... en(.)wikipedia(.)org/wiki/WP:FIRST (remove brackets) There is a Genealogy page already on wiki, looks pretty good. en(.)wikipedia(.)org/wiki/Genealogy

As OC has said, I also know of a site that has a wiki for its reference section, (it is the same site) . we began 'our' wiki at the beginning of March,(this yr) and after many 100's of Hours, coding the hyperlinks, learning how to add pictures, creating sections/making pages it is all looking Very nice now (although we still have along way to go) we have a section where our members can submit links/suggestions as to what they would like to see in our reference section. Once all of the 'fine tuning' has been done, then it will be opened for our membership to add/edit. (although it is searchable at the moment, only sysops are allowed to edit)

Given that the wiki FTF took hundreds, if not thousands, of voluntary man-hours to set up, I doubt if GR will be offering the same facility - but if you don't ask them, you will never know. OC

Or you could always check out the Family Tree Forums wiki. I think its unlikely GR will ever set up something like this - it would cost a fortune if not done voluntarily. Considering they havent responded to the numerous requests to have stickies for important info at the top of boards - I doubt very much if they would do something like a wiki!

I am in complete agreement. The Family Tree Forum is making good use of the Wiki and they are adding to it all the time. Well worth a look. Tricia

I do not think that people can find family tree forum via Google. This will get you there; http://www.genealogistsxgr.*co.uk/ (remove *) PS Google findmypast without spaces.

I think the site I run my website from is like that. I get statistics back about how many contributors there are (ie. me and one person who left a comment) - it's pretty interactive and I think the sites can be added to by anyone you give the password or login details to. There are a few other people running sites from the main site I run mine from - all sorts of topics, not just genealogy. The address of my site is - http://katesfamilytree*wetpaint*com (change * for .)
