Thankyou for spending time on this. Yes the census you have there is one of the ones i have for the daughter Eliza Fetter living with her grandparent. Her parents are much more elusive but potentially more interesting if I can find which part of Germany Philipp John was from. Thanks again.

Thanks for your help :-) I have the marriage certificate for Philipp John Fetter and Eliza Ann Fetter formerly Andrews on the 27 Oct 1856 in Bermondsey, Surrey. I have not looked up a marriage for the eliza and John Linderman in the 1871 census because of the 1881 census I have where John Fetter is still married to Eliza. Maybe they are not the same people and it is all a coincidence.

1871......... I would think that the two elder children, with the surname Veter, Anna & Samuel, are actually stepchildren to John. Have you looked for a marriage between him and Eliza? Reg

Why is it so hard to find these people in the censuses? I have a birth certificate for Eliza Fetter b 24 Jul 1857 in Shoreditch, Middlesex. Her parents are listed as Philipp John Fetter (a fur skin dyer) and Eliza Ann Fetter formerly Andrews. I also have their marriage certificate for 27 Oct 1856 in Bermondsey, Surrey. His surname is listed as Vetter then though, but his occupation is the same. The only census I have for them is 1881, where he is going by the name of John Fetter, but it does say that he was born in about 1827 Germany! I would love to know where abouts, so I am keen to find them is the other censuses, especially between 1857 and 1881 when I suspect they remained in the london area. I found a couple in in 1871 census who resemble them closely but I am not sure it is them. The location is shoreditch and his proffession is correct, and the birth dates and places are approximately correct. They even have a daughter called Sophia that matches. The trouble is that they are down as John & Eliza Lindenauer (possibly linderman). Some of their children seem to have a sirname veter. I cannot think what is going on here! Their daugher Eliza Fetter does not appear to have lived with her parents as a child. She is in the 1861 census as living in Shoreditch with her grandparents Phillip Cramer b 1808 Prussia (Preußen), Germany (a fur skin dyer) and Eliza Cramer b 1816 Theydon Bois, Essex. Their surname puzzles me as I Cramer is neither of her parent's surnames and yet their seems to be a lot of fur dying going on. Eliza Fetter is also in the 1871 census as still living in Shoreditch with her grandparents. This time though, they have a secong granddaughter living with them Janet E Fetter b.1866 Shoreditch. If this is Eliza's sister then it does imply that thier parents should be on the 1861 census somewhere. I think part of the problem is the number of possible spellings of Cramer / Kramer / Creamer and Fetter / Vetter and Theydon Bois which people spell in a lot of different ways. I have tried all combinations I can think of, but I cannot find any other census records. Can anyone think of anything else to try? Thanks very much for takiong the time to read all of this :-)
