Help Please On Sending Just One Branch Of My Famil

Some one has contacted me, who appears to be from my family. I am very excited about this, as this is the first direct link I have had and I feel sure they are related. However, although they have sent me their family tree to view I do not wish to send them my entire family tree, only the branch connected to them. Is there any way I can do this without divulging the rest of my family tree please? I am still learninjg so would very much appreciate your help - Thank you to all who may (or may not) reply!

I'm not sure that this can be done, but open up your tree which will show 'feed back and help' near the top. Click on it and ask those who run the show.

Thank you Kenneth - I will try that. Have never used this particular site before to post message but felt sure I would get lots of response to my plea for help. However - how wrong can you be!! Thank you for my one and only reply! Rosie

You talk of 'they have sent me on ebranch of thei rtree to view'. This suggests to me you have a family tree programme in which case ..... Open a new database. Import from your existing one say yourself and then add your mother plus ancestors. If that will still be too much then, with at least the trees I have tried, you can cherry-pick just which ancestors/ descendents you want. Having got the ones and only the ones you want in the new tree go to File> Export> GEDCOM and you have a file with just a few names to send to your contact. If you want further help pm me. Clive

Thank you Clive - Sorry if I didnt explain clearly -I didnt mean they have sent me only one branch of their family tree - I meant I only wished to send them the relevant branch of family tree from my side. Rosie

Thank you Joyce - that is exactly my point - I dont want to send them ALL my family tree, just the relevant part, so will do as you suggest and e mail them the relevant part as the rest of my tree is of no significance to them anyway as it covers the other half of my family whom they dont need to know about anyway. Many thanks Rosie

Thank you Joyce - have read your other message on this board and that was exactly my worry! As you say, people learn by their mistakes so I thought I would learn before I actually made the mistake! At least you will be more cautious in the future but it is sad when you try and help people and they take advantage of it. Sadly not everyone is genuine like us(but thankfully most are!). Rosie x

Thanks for raising this Rosie - I wondered this myself. So, we need to email the relevant info. But is there a simpe way of doing this, rather than Copy & Pasteing each bit of info, which is pretty labourious? Bee

Just to clarify, on GR you can't actually send anyone your tree, you can only let them view it - all or nothing. I take the view that if you let someone see your tree, then don't complain if they copy the information you let them see. I have found that most people are interested in their own branch but just occasionally go overboard and start copying info that is not relevant. If you have your master tree on your home PC in a program such as FTM, then you can send them reports or gedcom files (as attachments via external emails) containing as much or as little information that you wish. This way you control what they get to see, and if they so choose, copy to their own tree.
