Hi everyone, any advice on finding a birth ref. I have been looking for a birth ref for my gt gt grandfather charles Malyan. On the 1851 census he is living at Hever castle cottage with william and harriet (mum and dad) aged 5..on all other censuses he give his age and birth year as 1846 I cannot find a ref to his birth anyway, Any tips as to what else to do? thanks yvette

Hi Yvette, it is possible that he wasn,t registered as registration wasn't compulsory until 1875. There is a Charles Frederick Malyon in Pancras in 1846, Joan

Yvette Found a birth for his brother Frederick Malyan 1841 Jun Qtr Sevenoaks Vol 5 P 379. Also Male Malyan 1843 Sep Qtr Sevenoaks Vol 5 P 387. This could possibly be his brother Benjamin as the age fits with the census. Can't find anything for a Charles Manyan with any variants of the spelling. Maybe he could be mistranscribed. One of my Orton family was registered as Auten! Carole xx

Hi Yvette There is a birth registered in the third quarter of 1846 in Sevenoaks for a Charles Maynard. Given the number of mistranscriptions, this may be your man. Regards Helen

ooh thanks everyone, i have seen the entry for st Pancras, but doubted that one, seeing as the rest of the family were in kent. I think i will check that one out under the mis spelt name. I wish you could see the parents names, to save ordering the wrong cert. Thanks everyone for you help.

just thought i would let you know, i have looked on the 1881 census for charles maynard b 1846 sevenoaks and come up with nothing so its possible this could be the one, i keep saying the name over and over to myself trying to imagine how a mistake like that could be made, it makes you realise how far we have come in education. I think i will order a birth cert, the parents surname will be spelt wrong as well i suppose but if the christian names are the same its probably right, thanks again for your advice

Yvette As the entries were hand transcribed and passed from the local records office to the GRO, the error may have occurred because the handwriting was bad. You may find it better to go directly to Sevenoaks register office (if you google contact details should be available) and see if they have an entry under the correct name. I do think though, if you order it from the GRO, you will probably find it is the right one. I ordered one under the name Renard - The certificate quite clearly states Kenard - luckily it was the correct one, but should have been Kennard. Good luck. Helen
