Member Since: January 2005 Posts: 21 Send Message	Hi, I have a 1841 census entry for Thomas West with occupation as best I can read it as 'M.L'. This is in the county of Somerset. In 1851 his occupation is Coachman (Bristol), and by the age of 80 in 1871 he is listed as a retired Gentleman's Servant. What might M.L. stand for? Any suggestions?

Member Since: January 2005 Posts: 21 Send Message	I had another look it could be an S. Unfortunately there are no other capital S to compare it to, there is a capital L though and it still looks very like that. Was M.S. a common abbreviation?

	M.S. and F.S. are the most common occupations on the 41 census. They are male servant and female servant. Margaret
