I've had trouble finding ancestors before, but never had one popping up twice! My g-g mother Sarah Rudd, nee Pitchers. On 1881 census she is listed at home with husband Fred a brickmaker at Oulton Road Suffolk, but she is also listed as being with her mother at High Road Ringsfield Suffolk. How can this happen?

Richard that happened quite often, the forms for the census were handed out a few days before the census night, she could have filled hers in intending to be at home but was then called away to her mothers and was entered on her form as well. From Ancestry.... Enumeration forms were distributed to all households a couple of days before census night and the complete forms were collected the next day. All responses were to reflect the individual's status as of 3 April 1881 for all individuals who had spent the night in the house. People who were traveling or living abroad were enumerated at the location where they spent the night on census night. All of the details from the individual forms were later sorted and copied into enumerators' books, which are the records we can view images of today. The original householders schedules from 1841 to 1901 were destroyed. Georgina.

Maybe the 2 houses were near to each other & she was in 1 housewhen the enumerator called, then she was in the other housewhen the enumerator called at that house, as the census was supposed to represent who was in that house on that night it would be possible to be put down twice. My theory anyway. Hilary. x

It's a regular occurrence. I have several instances of family members being listed more than once. The enumerator didn't ask to see the 'bodies'.......he recorded the info he was given. Reg

Ah I assumed the census man knocked and recorded what he was told from home owner. Has not happened in my tree before so maybe been lucky until know. Her father was buried on 9 March 1881, so her mother was recently widowed and alone, which would expain her being round there, just was puzzled why she was also listed at home. Understand now, thanks everyone.

A relation of mine was a monthly nurse. she's listed at the address where she was living in with the new mum ,And at her normal home address. guess she may have been at either one on census night and both thought she was to be listed, shirley
