I believe that the Silver War Medal was only awarded to those who were wounded or otherwise incapacitated during WW1. It was, I think, to prevent any suggestion of cowardice among young men returning from the war. Though of course most who received it subsequently died, as did my great uncle. Wendy

Can anyone tell me if this was awarded to just those dicharged through ill health/invalidity or if this was also awarded to commisioned officers who resigned their rank. If decommisioned officers got the badge could they a year later claim to be a Lietenant a year later on their marriage certificate? And finally is there a way to check the details with out the trip to London? - I have the badge number, name and regiment details. Sorry if this is obvious - help much appreciated.
