Out of all the sites around eg GR, Ancestry. Findmypast etc which one is best value to get as much information as possible, I am going to purchase one and would like know which one to buy into. I am abit of a newbee so still finding my way round. Thanks Jill

No contest, really........Ancestry. The one advantage of findmypast is the facility to search censuses by address, but, of course, they don't have all censuses..... Whatever you do...DON'T buy any units of any sort on GR..........definitely NOT good value. Reg

I have inherited my mothers years of efforts on our family tree (a briefcase full of paper!) and now have it on Family Tree Maker... have yet to complete the tree bit on this system. I note that you all seem to favour one site to assist in tracing relatives..... can someone please explain the basics of that site and provide a link please? Thank you, John

I agree, no contest, Ancestry for sure. Even justified the renewal fee a little while ago as I now cant live without it.

Family tree maker is produced by ancestry, so you should be able to click on the help tab at the top for a connection to sub to it. Ancestry is the best tool we have for finding relatives in the 1901-1841 censuses, also the complete bmd index and lots of other goodies. 24/7 usage, no extra costs - still I believe available for new subs through Lost Cousins site for about £56 the year - otherwise just under £80 for the year and worth every single penny. If you didnt have the familytreemaker or if its an old version, I would suggest you upgrade it - the info you have will just transfer over when you put the new one in - TWR Computing on line have the 'Who do you think you are' version for about £12 at the moment INCLUDING a months free trial sub to ancestry - bargain.

Heather..... thank you so much, us blokes dont read instructions! I have Family Tree Maker 11... shall I upgrade and if I do can I move all my stuff over? I will most certainly look at the instructions! I will hit the tab you mentioned later... have to go out. Thank you for your advice..... I aint very good at this... yet

The family tree maker will automatically transfer over to the newer versions - Im not sure in V11 works - have a look on TWR Computing online or on my-history website - they are both very helpful sites and you can ring and speak to them. http://www*zen69420.zen*co*uk/ftm*htm (TWR computing) http://www*my-history*co*uk/acatalog/Family_Tree_Maker_2006*html (my-history addy) Replace asterisks in the above addresses with a full stop (GR wont allow website addresses on here). I just looked at the my-history site where there is a comparison chart - have a look, they also offer full telephone back up and appear to be selling the WDYTYA version for £10 including a months sub (ridiculous, they are virtually paying you to buy it!). And it does say that version will upgrade the V11. For £12 its got to be worth getting a newer version - especially when you get a months free sub thrown in. Familytreemaker can be backed up to cd and internet storage and you can have your own website at the click of a few buttons. Jill, when I first got ancestry Id be on it 16 hours a day.
