Hi all, having had a very nasty scare recently when my FTM tree seemed to have gone into meltdown (many thanks again to all on here who gave me helpful advice), I am keen to back my tree up in some foolproof way. I'm sure there was a thread on here a while ago from someone who'd backed their tree up about three different ways. Can anyone remember what it was, or give me suggestions of their own? Thanks in advance for all your always valued help - without you all I'd have given up long ago & taken up knitting instead! |

well you can back the tree to CD, you can pay for it to be stored on Ancestry, think its under a tenner per year. Or you can get one of those memory sticks and save it to that. , Thats all i can think of at the mo. I regularly back mine to CD. Served me well when my last Pc blew its motherboard suddenly and i had to buy a new Pc |

I back mine up to a cd but at one point I had a computer crash and lost my hard drive AND I had not backed up for a month. Luckily I also have a website through FTM - havent you done that? You just go to internet tab and then create home page and just follow the instructions - basically you click next a lot of times - and then you have your own free website - which really impresses people. You can keep it private and view by invitation only or put it on to google search. I put it on to a search - took a chance - Ive had about 5 very good contacts through it. But you can just keep it for friends and rellies to view. And as I hadnt backed up by cd when the puter crashed, I had luckily updated my home page each time I added info (again, just a click) so I sat here for 2 days copying out 30 pages of info. At least I had it. Since then I pay about a fiver a year for internet back up storage aswell (this ISNT the homepage). Ancestry keep all your stuff stored on their servers so if your puter crashes, you havent got a home page to consult and you stand on your cd - its still all there. |

I have mine downloaded on a memory stick from the pc. Apart from having a basic tree on GR I also have a detailed tree with photos on Tribal Pages for personal use only and immediate family....which I love. Linda |

Thanks very much for those suggestions. With my very limited knowledge of computers, I think I will try them all, on the grounds I might get at least one right! |

Well, to back up to cd, you just bung one in your puter, click on file on the ftm, click on back up to cd and it does it for you. Ditto for internet back up. And to create home page - as above. |

Eileen, Im not a techi - if you mean your outlook express emails - the ones on the hard drive - I had this problem too - by googling I found a program that you could have a free trial of that opened the email files that you cant do normally. If you do a google search - I cant remember what the program was called now - but put in a google search something like - opening outlook express files and Im sure you will find it too - something to do with bdx files or some such. Have a go anyway, I managed to open the majority of mine then. |
