Ancestry permitting. 1871 Census - Gamlingay. William Splevins - what do you make of the family set up? Can anyone decipher where the wife was born? Thanks, M. Steer

At a guess, the daughters surname is her married name and the son maybe from a previous relationship from the wife with her first husbands surname? The place of birth of the wife, looks like woodham walter, which, when googled, brings up a place in Essex. The word in brackets at the start of where her place of birth is stated, does look like it could say Essex. Also, the daughters marital status is married.

Do you think the boy maybe Grandson? There seems to be a bit of 'squiggle' before son? M. Steer

I'd do what Reg suggests, just because William is their Grandson, doesn't automatically mean that Susan is his mother. Do you know if William and Susan Spelvins had any other children (in particuar, girls?)

Oh, I didnt even notice his age!!! I think he may have been a little too young to be their son!! I certainly looks to me like either a 'G' or an 'S', my guess going on the 'G', for Grand-son.
