Has anyone come across NK scrawled over the birthplace of a complete family?'England' is scrawled in all the boxes for place of birth with NK across the lot! Could it be Not Known if the household were a bit reticent about their origins? Mike Stephenson

yes it means Not known . people tended to move around a lot in rented accomodation and as lots couldnt read or write they really lost touch with where they were born sometimes they stated the last area they lived in when the enumerator asked where did you come from., thats why place of birth altered on each census for some. It may not be that the people were reticent - it may mean the person completing the form genuinely didnt know - a landlord for example.
