I'm assuming you mean the name is mistranscribed on the image of the index page rather than on the Freebmd/Ancestry transcription. When I had a case like this I ordered using the name on the GRO index but added a note ie 'COLE Thomas (name may be Coe on certificate)' On this occasion I was right, when the original handwritten list of names had been retyped in the early 1900s all the Coes in that quarter had been listed as Cole

Thanks everyone. Judith how strange, the name on the cert I want is Cole but the index says Cale. Caz

I had this 2weeks ago ...it was a marriage cert. so I left the second name out ...I got it..

Hi Caz I find the best thing to do is put the mis-transcribed name. If you put another name the GRO may assume it is the wrong certificate, not send you the certificate and return £3 or £4 for an abortive request. Gill

Can anyone tell me how to order a cert from the gro when the name has been mistranscribed please? Should I give the name which should be on the cert or the name in the index? many thanks Caz
