Sorry, no - to get the exact date you have to buy the certificate. OC

As O.C. says - most of us dont really need to know the exact dates but we do need the other information the certificate will provide, such as a marriage which will give both fathers names and occupations, the witnesses names, the residence of the couple and so on. You cant do a family tree without buying them. You get them from GRO online for £7 - you need the reference you find on freebmd or ancestry complete index.

Thank you, I feared as much. Does anyone know is there any real advantange of having the exact dates? Just wondering if they would be a bit of a waste of money.

Well, maybe no real advantage to knowing the dates, but depending on what sort of cert, you will get all sorts of information you couldn't find any other way. OC

Thanks OC & Heather, I have bought some in the past but just wondered if buying them all (a few at a time) had any real advantages. Thanks Lin

I dont buy them all - only those for my direct line (or others that intrigue me). If you dont buy them you will never be certain you are following the right line. You could always try the familysearch.org IGI for dates

As Heather says, you will never be certain you are following the right line if you don't get at least your direct ancestors certs. And they often throw up some big surprises - well, mine do, anyway, like previous marriages you didnt know about, or unexpected causes of death, including suicide or murder, or an informant or witness who turns out to be a family member you knew nothing about. Unless you have a really unusual surname, you cannot be certain you have the right people till you get the certs (and not always then, either). I think it is a false economy not to get certs. I couldnt find the marriage of my 2 x GGPs, but barged on backwards with my 2 x GGm's tree - dead easy, using Parish Records. YEARS later, I discovered she was a late, second wife, with the same first name as the first wife, who was my 2 x GGM, not the woman I had spent years and £££ researching. OC
