I'm trying...believe me I'm trying...to find a birth record on Ancestry but to no avail. On census and marriage record she is Emma Maria Coomber Nee Ball born about 1850 in Northampton, died 1900 Croydon Surrey but cannot find birth record. I'm dying to go to bed but refuse till I find it! Jen

Yes I did Maggie thanks...there's a couple of Emma Balls about that time and in roughly the right place but just can't understand why o Census and and Marriage records she put Emma MARIA and there is nothing on birth record, just Emma. Perhaps I'm hoping for too much, if I am I've come to a full stop on this one. Thanks Jen

At least Catholics and perhaps others quite often added a forename when they were confirmed. I have no idea why or how widespread the custom was but do know that a number of my rellies added a name and they were not Catholic!! Clive

Birth registration wasn't compulsory until 1875......she may simply not be registered......... Reg
