Maggy, your home page is basically ALL your info that you have entered in your program transformed into a quite professional looking site. Your photos etc. all go over and you can add reports and trees. Ive let mine be googled searched because I thought it worth taking the chance and getting contacts - which I have. But you can keep it just invitation only and friends/rellies all over the world that you invite can see it from their puter. If you want, pm me and Ill let you have an invite to mine! PS Shirley, but what if GR throws a hissy!! |

Well your genes tree isn't held on your PC its on the website so you wont lose it if your PC or laptop throws a hissy. i have FTM and do save it to CD . was invaluable when My old PC blew its motherboard in Jan and I had to buy a new PC . am going to save that to Ancestry too cos the cost is minimal. at least then i wont be relying on me having updated up to date on CD. I was thinking of making my own home page from my FTM. Can someone tell me what a home page actually is and if it's worth doing? |

Lin, there are various programs available - most of us have family tree maker. If I were you, Id look at my-history (google for it) website where they have the Who do you think you are family treemaker version for only a tenner including a months ancestry sub. Absolute bargain. Put the program on your puter - move your GR tree over to it - its easy, just click on the link on the left here and follow the instructions - they will send you a gedcom (which is just a word for a family tree file). You can open that in your installed familytreemaker program - then save that to disc by clicking on file, back up and save to cd. It is that simple. I also save mine to internet storage - do same thing and click on back up to internet and I also have my own home page - click on internet option, create homepage. That way you have it in three places should the worse happen. Get the ftm and it will be so much better for you than just the rather duff GR tree. |

My tree is only on G.R., unfortunately, I'm not computer literate, learning by trial and error and when you refer to GEDCOM and Exporting I haven't a clue what that means. |

Where is your main family tree stored? If you have it on Family Tree Maker or similar, there is usually the option to 'back up' in the 'File' menu. If you only have it here on Genes, you can choose to 'Export' in which case it will be sent to you as a GEDCOM attachment on an email. You can then save the attachment to a CD or memory stick. Last week I was the victim of a burglary, thankfully they left my laptop, but it suddenly dawned on me that if they had taken it everything I have done would have been lost. I understand you can 'Back Up' just in case your 'puter crashes etc. Instructions in basic words would be much appreciated plus how to update it each day. Thanks to anyone who can help. Lin |
