Hi Kathlyn, it was just a guess but see Clive's reply. I had a Scottish ancestor who suddenly became a crofter.

He may have been a farm labourer who took on the lease when his employer died. Is he at the same address for both censuses? OC

My gt uncle went from Ag Lab to farmer when he took over his father's farm. Clive

Do you have any certificates before and after the 1861 census showing his job title. Irene

Hi Lesley, So even though he was a farmers son he would have been listed as a farm labourer if he worked for his dad? Kathlyn

1851 census shows Joseph Barlow as a 'farm labourer'...the 1861 has him as a farmer of 40 acres. All the children from the 1851 are there, place of birth etc. all there. How would he have come 'up in the world'??? Kathlyn
