The London Metropolitan Archives is useful - Shoreditch records are under the London Borough of Hackney - if you use the London Generations database there is a list of the records held. They will help you by e-mail if you have any queries. http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/corporation/family-research/registerSearchResults.asp?boroughID=100&startdate=&enddate=&phrase=&page=1 I hope you get past your brick wall!

Hi Marie, Could you give us the district and county he was living in? Local records would help most of all. Give us what you know and we might be able to help further.

Have you tried the 1851 cenus for his widow? This should give a place of birth for her and may help Regards

Hi Heather I have looked on IGI but there are more than one John Longhurst maried to a Sarah. I have also looked for children born to them and have found several but dont know if they are the right ones. I cant order certs because it was before 1837. My 3rd gt grandfather James Longhurst was born 1807 Shoreditch, he is the one they were living with. I cant certify any other children.

Have you checked the IGI on familysearch.org? Do you know the eldest childs birth year? Check out around that time for a marriage. Where are they in 1841?

I have traced my Dads tree back to my 4th gt grandfather. He is on the 1841 census with his wife, living with his son, my 3rd gt grandfather. He is John Longhurst, wife Sarah aged 75 and 60. I found his death 1847 and ordered cert which confirmed his age. The problem is on the 1841 census it says not born in this county for both of them. How can I find a marriage or birth for them? Where would you start looking first? Please help.
