Not that was old enough really but all I can think of were either 'dealers' or at the markets where there were stall holders. I can remember in Portsmouth a huge area near the main dockyard gate where at the week end there was what today would be called a carboot sale. During the war I do not remember anything like that - most things were i nshort supply so there was quite a lot of bartering going on. Clive |

Following on from Clive's answer regarding the Portsmouth Dockyard Gate sellers, I am sure this was known as the 'totters' market where anyone could go to sell things. It was at Unicorn Gate and was still there in the early 1970s as far as I can remember. |

If she had a shop, then she would have paid rates. I don't know if historic rate books are still with the relevant authority, or whether they have been deposited in an archive. Perhaps a phone call to the present day rates department would tell you? OC |
