Have replied to your email. The mother's maiden name looks like Birks to me. Kath. x

Have you tried looking for a marriage to confirm the name? Rose

The marriage would have been before registration and I can't find one on IGI. This birth was in 1842 and the eldest child on the 1851 census would have been born about 1837. Kath. x

I looked at the cert with unbiased eyes but must say it looks like Birks to me too. Cheers, Horatia

Not knowing where or when Ann Birks (if that's the correct name) was born makes it difficult, but there is this birth in Lancashire which is a possibility:- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ANN BILLETT BIRKS Pedigree Female -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: 24 JUL 1804 Christening: 22 AUG 1804 St Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England Death: Burial: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parents: Father: WM. PENFORD BIRKS Family Mother: MARY SCARBROUGH I notice from the 1851 census that the eldest son is called William - could this be after Ann's father if this is the correct entry? Just a thought but would need checking. Kath. x

Just realised that on the 1841 census for the Smith family, there is a Mary Birks with them (probably Ann's sister), so it looks like Birks is the correct name. (Mary is given on her own as a separate household, but at the same address). However, Ann's age is less than I thought, so I don't think the birth I found on the IGI is the correct one. Kath. x
