I have a copy Birth Cert for my Grandmother, this cert was issued Oct 1900. The mothers name is shown as Annie Kisby formerly Burrows. I know Annie was born Annie Bowditch in South Wales, Gran was born near Rochdale Lancashire, I have never heard the name Burrows mentioned. It could it be on the origional cert her former name was incorrectly wrote due to dialect problems, or the copy has been wrongly copied, or she was married previously which no-one in the family has known about. Do I contact GRO for a copy of Grans Birth cert again to see what former name is put on, or ask GRO to check to see if this old copy is correct? If anyone else asks for a copy of Grans cert they could follow up the name Burrows in error.

Forgive my asking, but are you 100% sure you have the cert for the right person? Tell us when Annie Bowditch was born.....so we can look her up. Also the name of the father named of the birth cert Reg

No good asking the GRO anyway, as GRO certs are copies of the originals, sent to them by the local Register Office. Looks like she had been married twice, though, so not a mistake. OC

Susannah is described as 'Mother', but I suspect that's just an error in terminology Reg

Thanks I found in a box my Gran and Grandads Marriage cert and for each of them a copy of Birth Certs, looks like they were needed for school. Annie Bowditch was born in Cardiff about 1859, there are 2 Bowditch families in S Wales at this time, Annie is the daughter of George and Susannah. One census shows them as Borrowditch. They were in Lancashire for the 1881 census I have a photo of Annie on the back of which my Dad wrote the relationship. I jumped the gun as on Grandads side I found one Grandfathers wife Mary died one quarter and he married another Mary the next quarter
