I have a similar problem with my grandad and WW1, except I don't even know which regiment he was with! I know he served in 'Mesoptamia', which means he should have been awarded at least one medal, for overseas service. My aunt-by-marriage burned all family papers after her husband died, so I don't even have a photo of grandad in his uniform, although I seem to remember seeing one when I was young. The problem is that a very large number of records from WWI were destroyed in WWII ............ possibly the majority of records for the 'ordinary' serviceman. The records were first moved from the Defense department to another building in London. It was bombed. The surviving records were then moved to Kew. There was a fire. Good luck .......... to all of us!!!!!!! |

Perhaps he didn't meet the criteria for medal entitlement. You could check the service records at National Archives to see if his survive. |

It is quite clear that my Grandad was a conscript in WW1, going in after 1915. My Grandma told me which regiment he was in, the Cameronians, and experts on another site have confirmed this from pictures I have of him in uniform. However, he does not appear on the medical cards in the National Archives for the Cameronians, or the Scottish Rifles (their other name) so I'm a bit stuck. It has been suggested that he may have joined up under another name, or that his name may not be what I think it is. I'm not sure that he could have been conscripted under a false name and all his vital events were registered as simply EDWIN PHILLIPS. People called him Edward sometimes by mistake, but I've tried this and it simply led me up a dead end! Does anyone have any ideas how I could track him down? Thanks Sheila |
