My 1851 census jailbird (HMP Exeter) was traced through Quarter Sessions at the Devon Record Office. 8 Months & once lashed for stealing a Sovereign, half sovereign and small coins! I am wondering if 1901 records may be restricted under the 100 year rules?

You definitely need court records - if it is a long sentence quarter or petty sessions, for a short sentence magistrates court. Clive

It may be worth a look on the National Archives catalogue. I was lucky enough to find trial records from 1970. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk Jennifer

Does anybody have any idea if Police records c 1900 are available? Trying to find a family member who appears in 1901 census for Wormwood Scrubs (Oh the shame!). Have tried blacksheep, ancestry etc etc. Also checked all executions just in case. Would love to know what he did and how long he served but hit a brick wall.
