Thank you for your help, Reg! I am sure you have found the correct Joseph so I now have his year of death. I am presuming that Eliza was the mother of Edward, as Rebecca seems to have disappeared on the 1861 Census, perhaps she got married by then.

In that case, the birth may well be the correct one.......I didn't make the connection with Rochford......sorry! Reg

1851 census has Edward's birthplace as Leigh Essex. Name: Edward Robinson Age: 2 Estimated birth year: abt 1849 Relation: Grandson Gender: Male Where born: Leigh, Essex, England Civil parish: Leigh County/Island: Essex Country: England Registration district: Rochford Sub-registration district: Rayleigh ED, institution, or vessel: 1 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 160 Household Members: Name Age Benjamin Robinson 5 Edward Robinson 2 Eliza Robinson 20 George Robinson 11 Jane Robinson 14 John Robinson 9 Joseph Robinson 52 Rebecca Robinson 12 William Robinson 16 So a birth registered in Rochdale is unlikely to be his. I wonder if anyone can help me further with my research, this is still quite new to me! I have the following info from 1851 Census in Leigh Street, Leigh, Essex:- Joseph Robinson (head)(52) Eliza (20) - Dau Rebecca (18) - Dau William (16) - Son Jane (14) - Dau George (11) - Son John (9) - Son Benjamin (5) - Son Edward (2) - Grandson I am presuming that either Eliza or Rebecca is the mother of Edward age 2. If I order his birth cert is that the only way to find out the mother? I did a search on Free BMD Index and found a Edward Jones Robinson born in Rochford, Oct-Dec 1848 (Vol 12 p. 179) - I think it could be him but not positive. Family told me that Edward was illegitimate (which would tie up with Census) and that his father was an Irish Baronet!! (mother - servant) I guess there's no way of proving whether that is true! Perhaps his father's surname was Jones. Also I seem to have lost most of the family in subsequent Census'. I expect Eliza & Rebecca would have got married by then but I don't know who to, so can't search the family any further. Joseph seems to vanish too, perhaps he died. I've tried contacting other members of GR but seem to have drawn a blank with this side of my Tree. Thank you for any help you may be able to offer!!
