Strange Question regarding marriage abroad.....

I'm not sure, but I don't think you have to let the GRO know about your marriage. As for your descendants finding your marriage - with great difficulty, just like some of us today looking for marriages!!! Kath. x |

....let's say you were a British Citizen holding a British Passport and decided to get married whilst overseas, would you have to inform the BMD people back in England? If not how will your relatives trace your marriage years from now? |

Hi Paula I am also in California. I married in California (holding a British passport) and I didn't inform anyone in UK. It didn't even occur to me to do so. As you say this sort of situation could cause problems for people in the future who are looking up their ancestry. Knowing how frustrating these searches can be I now feel guilty!!! I hope all my future rellies will be able to look me up on GR. LOL. |

I'm also living in California and married an American. I am still a Canadian citizen. Since we have so few relatives/family members, I guess it really won't matter that there isn't a record in Canada as there probably won't be anyone to look for me! ;) |

You can register with consular offices. In the case of children this may be important as it will affect future rights of entry. Clive |

Wow, Diane!! You make my situation sound so minor!! I was a British Citizen, vacationing in Crete where I met and married my American hubby. Our certificate is in Greek and the base hubby was stationed on had it translated for us! When we moved to the States we had another wedding ceremony but in looking for a record of it online there isn't one so I'm assuming it wasn't officially recognized as a wedding maybe a renewal of vows??? Anyway, in doing my own research of various branches of my family tree I asked myself ' How the heck are my descendents going to be able to find me?' I am now an American citizen so I would imagine there must be a way to be traced through the INS ??? Who knows!! There is a paper trail for both my children~ that I have found online!!! |
