Just wondered. I hope to go there in the summer but as I get driven there by my long suffering partner, does anyone know if theres a nice waiting room he can sit in and have a coffee. I know the one at Bury St Edmunds does. Julie

Ive been a few times and no theres no waiting room ..just a hallway/reception part as you go in. The records office is on the first floor. If it's a nice day though its lovely in the carpark because your right next to the castle ruins. The shops are just down the road and there is a nearby pub. Sheila The staff are really really nice in there!

I'm pleased to see this post about Lewes Record Office because hubby and I plan to go there sometime soon. We've had a good ferret around looking for his West Sussex ancestors and relatives (West Sussex Record Office is one of the best I've ever visited) but now it's time to seek out more info on the East Sussex mob! ;-) Cheers, Horatia

If anyone is going to Lewes, check opening times and remember to book a space. It is quite a small office with limited room. They have a card index of baptisms, which can be searched and then it is easier to check the relevant parish register. Gwyn

Lewes can get very busy if there is a high-profile court case being heard. Media everywhere, as it's a small town. Best avoided on those days. Gwyn

Hi Julie, If you are wanting to look up Brighton stuff it would be worth ringing Lewes first to check they have what you are looking for as not all of Brighton records are held at Lewes Record office, some of it can only be found at the Brighton History Centre. Clare

Thank you to everyone who replied. My BF will be glad to hear theres a pub nearby!!! Thank you also to Clare for the info about the Brighton info. The castle ruins sound rather lovely. I look forward to checking it out.
