I have a real puzzle on my hands, I have managed to trace my mother in laws Mothers Weddings she married twice (once bigamously) and we know the date of her death. She had 7 children all who we have traced easily. My problem is i can not find a birth for her. This is every thing i know Sylvia Rose Taylor born 02nd March 1928 (Her word) Married Norman Keith S Ellis in 1946 Minchin hampton, Stroud Gloustershire Married Ivor Patrick Hodge in 1952 Chatham Kent Died Jan 2007 Penzance, Cornwall Sylvia was rumored to have stolen a fur coat in the 40's from a theatre she worked at and was sent to Glouster as a punishment. (Possibly) Mothers Name Lillian Ann Bailey born 17/09/1904 Castleford Fathers Name George Taylor born 13/08/1891 in Bradford George and Lillian had two other children Florence Lillian Taylor born 17/06/1929 Worksop Notts. Married Ernest Marsden and died 1999 in Sheffield George Cyril Taylor born Nov 1925 Pontefract Yorks. Married a Jean ? and died 1968 of cancer in Sheffield I say that Lillian is possibly Sylvia's mother as Sylvia always said her mother was called Elizabeth. Sylvia also started to write a book before she died and one of the titles in the book was 'same father different mother'. She destroyed all info. Sorry about the long message, just wanted to include all the facts. i was hoping that someone would be able to guide me in the right direction for tracing her birth. We have certificates for every thing else i have written births deaths and marriages. we could have another name on our tree if only i could find her birth. Thanks Helen

Helen, I hope you don't mind if I lay it out so its easier to read, GR always scrunches up the first post. The birth record for Florence certainly has the MMN as Bailey. So does George's. If Sylvia was born in between those two, one would have thought the mother would be the same. Reg

Helen Report 20 Jun 2007 17:07

Mothers maiden name is definatly Bailey for Florence and for Cyril Helen

What age is she on her first marriage cert? Do the names of the witnesses hold any clues? Did she ever indicate where she might have been born? Reg

Also what age was given on her death cert? I've looked on ancestry 1928 Apr, 1927 Apr, 1926 Apr but nothing but a shoulder ache! also could she have been Rose Sylvia? ,my family are always swopping their names. Selena

If she tried to imply that her mother was not the same as that of the other two, and there is any truth in it...........she could possibly have been registered under the mother's name. Reg

Thanks for looking, i too have found nothing on the birth indexes for 1927, 1928. According to one of her children she always said her mother was called Elizabeth and that she was born 02 March 1928 in Castleford. How would i even begin to trace her if she is under mother's maiden name different from Bailey. Will have to find out that first marriage cert but think she was 18 on it. No clues through witnesses. It was through trying to register her death that her children realised they had never seen a birth certificate for their Mother. Her age was calculated from the birth date she gave 02 march 1928. She was a bit cofused when she pasted away. Sylvia never really made contact with her sibling, a past issue that seperated them all and that i guess is what i am now looking for. it's so hard Helen

Just been talking to my mother in law she read the details off of Sylvia's first marriage certificate Sylvia Rose Taylor Spinster Age 18 yrs Occupation, nurse maid Father, George Taylor Occupation, Bank Clark There was no address for her or for the man she was marrying, this appeared strange to me as on all the other certificates we have they all have 'Residence at the time of marriage' this one just says Minchinhampton. Why would there not be an address. She refered to the people she worked for as 'Lady Mallett and Sir Roland. There is one lie on the cert as her father was a colliery fitter not a bank clerk. Helen

Hello Helen, had another trawl through the indexes for 28,29 and 30. Found the following Sylvia's Jul 1928 (MMN Watson) Wandsworth Apr 1929 (MMN Collis) East Stonehouse Jan 1930 (MMN Taylor) Westbury Oct 1930 (MMN Taylor) Burnley I looked to 1930 in case she added a couple of years to her age for whatever reason. Hopefully some kind soul could have a looked at the indexes for other years or perhaps under Bailey. good luck, Selena
