You may need to bear in mind that if he was a conscript he could well have been sent where he was needed. This is why my grandad, who lived in Leicester all his life, finished up in the Scottish Rifles. I know he was in that regiment because I have pictures of him in uniform and it has been verified, but I can't find his medal card! Happy hunting. Sheila |

Kate Another possibility worth considering is to look at the first voter's list for the end of the 1914-18 War, if you have access to the relevant county records office. I know here in Worcestershire the lists contain details of 'absent voters', if you know his address at the time, you might be able to pick up details of his army number and regiment that way. Unfortunately there don't appear to be any hard and fast rules. I've seen absent soldiers names and regiment but no number and others where both are recorded. Andrew |

Hi again Diane, Afraid I don't have any of his medals, so don't know his reg. no. He survived the war by several years so won't be on the CWGC site. However, the options I have are quite good; he was born/lived in Staffs, and there is only one soldier listed who served in a Staffordshire regiment. Hopefully he did join his local regiment and that's him. Thanks again! Kate |

I'm trying to trace one of my g-grandfather's WW1 medal cards, but 6 results have come up for his name. (Unfortunately they don't show his middle name - Balfour - or I would know which was him!) I don't know any details like rank, number etc. so is there any way I could narrow it down? Did soldiers mostly serve in a regiment from their own county? Any help appreciated, thank you! |
