Paul, use freebmd - it is a name searchable site. Its only up to the early 1900s so you will then have to use ancestry. Ive bumped up some threads for newbies for you to read through. Also the 3 days free ancestry access thread. |

Wow! That was quick..... Thank you all. I am using the GR site. I was just about to purchase some credit, but I think I'll wait now. I was making the mistake of thinking I'd see direct matches in the records section but the 'phone book' explanation has made it all make sense. Thank you. I'll try out the websites listed also. Finding my English family shouldn't be to big a prob initially but the Irish side sounds a tad more difficult! Regards, Paul |

At a guess you are viewing a list of possible index pages for the name you are searching you then have to look at the image of the page to see if it contains the name you are searching for. The GRO index pages contain alphabetical lists of names so if for instance you were searching for a birth of Ada MARTIN in the first quarter of 1918 you would be directed to a page containing names FROM Robert Marshall (the first name on the page) TO Cecilia Martin (the last name on the page). It works just like looking up names in a phone book :-) |

First of all Paul, do you mean you have paid out to view them on this site? Dont! You can see a lot of bmd free on freebmd - name searchable If you dont find it there (its being transcribed by volunteers and not complete) you can look free again on ancestry*co*uk at the complete index - by going through the images quarter by quarter. Id also add you can view all the census 1841-1901 for the UK plus the US records aswell free for 3 days at the moment at ancestry*com Replace all asterisks above with full stops. |

Hi All, Sorry, but I am new to this! When searching the marriages, births etc I see names listed by 'TO' and 'FROM'???? To and from what???? Almost certainly a stupid question but I had to ask as I am a tad befuddled as to how to interpret the results. Regards, Paul |
