a relative in 1861, gives occupation as 'goes out to work' friend says shes read that this means prostitute! Does it??

dressmaker was the usual occ given for prostitute , perhaps your rellie just resented giving personal info .

I don't think so. Do some of the other's in the house work at home? It might just be to show that she is different. If you want to give the name and place so we can have a look it might help. Kath. x

Ancestry has come back on again. Since she is a widow who 'goes out to work', I wonder if she was at work and one of the children gave the information to the enumerator and just didn't know what work she did? Kath. x

Jenny!! lol I didnt mean all dressmakers were 'ladies of the night.or even afternnoon lol' there were lots of geniune dressmakers most mums did sewing any way and found that a money earner if they were good at it. Unlike the other money earning profession.!! Sorry if I gave you a jolt !! Shirley
