Or could it be a nickname/ shortning for something else such as Elizabeth? Im struggling to find my ggreatgrandma Isabella Hurtley in the census 1841 and 1851.The only possible is Elizabeth that matches perfectley except for first name. Thanks Sharmala.

I don't think Isabella is, although its more than likely the person that went to the house collecting the information misheard and wrongly put down Elizabeth instead of Isabella. Which I have to say happened quite a lot. Nicola

HURTLEY looks to be a name which could be easily misread as HARTLEY, so sugest you look under that as well, dont rely on the index, look at the images. Jennifer

Just to add to the confusion Isabella is also the name of a Spanish Queen:... Queen of Castile and Aragon, Queen of Spain. Also known as: Isabella of Castile and Aragon, Isabella the Catholic, Isabel la Catolica Jo

hi Ive tried all variations of first name and second, wild cards, just first, last names and so on, she just dont want to be found! she was born in 1837 in Silsden, West Yorkshire (she and her brother are consistent with place of birth on census) the daughter of Thomas Hurtley a boatman, i do know this as i have her marriage certificate i know for certain now she had a brother James born 1840/1 as i also have his marriage certificate to confirm they were siblings, but no trace of him either until they both moved to Burnley, lancs where they both married Isabella must have been before 1858 and james before 1870.

The 1841 census mistranscribed as Huttley is the closest i can find in the right place but isabella isnt there, but james and thomas are. sorry not explaining myself very well! Elizabeth is there at age 5 and there are 2 james`s but if you look at the image it says Hurtley and the other james age 5 is Jonas.so mistakes there .

Isabella is Spanish for Elizabeth, when I lived there I'm pretty sure they referred to our Queen as Reina Isabella. Jeannie

My Scottish Grandmother was Elspeth (Scottish version of Elizabeth) and she had a sister called Isabella - known as either Isa, or Bella! I would think it is just a straightforward mishearing of the name. OC
