Fanny It does have the ring of a tale which has grown in the telling, though! It is extremely unlikely that any large Estate would have been completely unattended even on market day - there would have been servants, groundsmen etc, who would have been alerted to gunshots, etc. And only the Magistrate could fix the fine - nothing to do with the land owners (although of course, the magistrate was probably a land owner). Newspapers are your best bet. A long trawl, but could be very rewarding. Let us know what you find. OC |

Story has it like this 1940's great ?Uncle Mort Or Morph was living in sussex age assesed in the 40's he was a poacher ,a very very good poacher,the land owners had had enough,ha was caught,and decided to fine him so hard he couldnt pay,he would be jaov TRIAL day always market day he appeared found guilty,fined £60. the land owners cheered..a stranger walked to bench, placed £60 on desk he and Uncle Morph walked from court never seen again, Now being ,market day plus landownwers in court,there was no one on the estates,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, THEY had been wiped out of all pheasants for miles. now dilema is this true hope so my l uncle said it's true , |
