1831 or 1911?

i would be the same and choose 1831 but im not sure it would be much help but maybe just maybe it would let me know where my gr gr gr grandfather was born lol |

1911 will be very useful to me, I hope. I'd love to know where my grandmother was that year. The census will also hopefully show whether her uncle's wife had yet died......I'm spoilt for choice with so many Hannah Davies in Wales to choose between. As Hannah can only be found on census after she married....and has 3 different birth counties, ...I need help. Gwyn |

If I understand correctly, only the 'head' of the household was named.......... A couple of 1831 census transcriptions are available online.......google for links. All relevant info can be found on genuki.......... Reg |

It looks like the 1911 census will have the original householders forms reproduced in their own handwriting in many cases.That should be interesting! |

1911 every time .The 1831 was no more than a headcount and wont give name details so we were told at one of my Family History Society meets |

It would be the 1911 for me definitely. I need it to tell me how many siblings my grandparents had and I'm hoping it will tell me where one set of my great-great grandparents vanished to. So it would be the 1911 every time. Caz |

30 May 1831 Enumerators recorded the number of people in the parish, the number of houses, some information on peoples occupations and some statistics..... Some Enumetators also made a list of names. The downside is that few of the census returns survive. I would suggest contacting the Local Record Office to see what survives. Chris |

I've changed my mind. If only Head of Household is named then 1831 won't help me. If on the other hand, I get to see my Grandfathers 'hand' on 1911 that alone will be worth it. M. Steer |
