Hey Richard Mary Jane's birth was on IGI or familysearch.org If your looking for births before 1875 in Scotland then its a good site to help you narrow down the birth before getting it on SP. You go onto the website, click on search at the top (blue tab) then when the next page comes up click on International Gen...(i cant spell!) on the left hand side. When the next window appears put in the parents names in the parents names bit and leave everything else blank apart from put Brittish Isles and Scotland. Thats how i got Mary Jane's birth :) Cheers Mhairi

Hi Mhairi, Thank you for your help. It seems too close a coincidence to have this address on the birth certificate and linking to Thomas as a labourer. I will do as you suggest and look at this record more closely. Can I ask how you were able to get the birth record for Mary Jane so quickly? Once again, many thanks Regards - Richard

Records are more complete at the GROS though it may be that your family have been written down wrong or are just mistranscribed or there is a page or two missing. Do you have the address they where at in 1860 and the birth address? I'll take a look at the two of them for you on ancestry. Oh and what was Thomas's occupation? Thanks Mhairi

Mhairi Thanks for the lead on Mary Janes birth. I have secured the registry entry which places parents potentially in Glasgow from Dec 1860 to Sept 1861. As you found I can not trace them in the census records for 1861 in Scotlandspeople.gov.uk records nor those for Huddersfield hense my questions below. Can anyone tell what date the Scottish census of 1861 was carried out? and Are the records held on Sctlandspeople as complete as those I will find at the Edinburgh GRO? Many thanks - Richard

Mhairi Amazing, thanks for your response. I had no knowledge of Mary Jane Todd as thomas and Eliza moved to Huddersfield some time between 1860 and 1871 where I find there first census records and Mary is not listed in the household. I can only assume she had died and this is more for me to research. Thomas's mother Mary was not listed as deceased on his marriage certificate but his father James was. I have not found a birth certificate for Thomas hense my reason for getting to Edinburgh GRO. Many thanks for your help this is most appreciated. Richard

Is Mary listed as being deceased on her sons marriage cert? Have you tried looking for her death? There are 6 Mary Wilson/Tod* deaths between 1855 and 1956. Forgot to mention since he was born pre 1855 you may not find a birth reference for him or even a christening as it wasnt compulsery or the books have been lost or...list goes on. Do you have them in the 1861 census? I'm looking on ancestry but cant see them even though i'm sure they stayed in Glasgow for a while. Do you have this daughters cert? MARY JANE TODD Birth: 14 SEP 1861 Central District, Glasgow, Lanark Parents: Father: THOMAS TODD Mother: ELIZA JANE SOMERVILLE Regards Mhairi

Tom, Thanks for the prompt response and yes I will book a place at the GRO. I am currently searching Scotlandspeople.gov.uk census 1841 and 1851 to see if I get a match across James, Mary and Thomas as I am assuming if the Gros Data numbers are the same across all three names then this is worthy of further investigation. Do you know if this is a correct assumption? Can I also take you up on the details of the Strathclyde Geneology Centre. Thanks for the help. Mhairi, Thanks for the tips, the Dome sounds to be an interesting place. Richard

Hey :) Although you could book a place at the GROS in Edinburgh i've never done so, some days can be busier than others though. Especially Thursdays for some reason. Everything is on the computers, just like SP so if you've used that you will have no problems. Make notes and know exactually what you are going to search for otherwise you'll get sidetracked :) If you arent going to be paying for photocopies then make up database sheets so that you remember to copy down all the information on the cert. There have been a number of times i have gone home only to discover that i forgot to write down the date or an address ect. Full days search is £17 while from 1pm till closing its £11. If you really want to be amoung the records then ask if they can place you in the Dome, its an amazing place :) Hope some of that helps. If you have any more questions dont hesitate to ask. Mhairi

Having now traced my paternal tree from Huddersfield to Glasgow I have been fortunate to find a marriage certificate of my GG grandfather Thomas Todd dated 1860 giving me details of age, address, occupation and parents names with their occupations. The certificate of the officiating minister is from Barratt or Barrack Street Church in Glasgow. The father James is listed as deceased and he was a Dyer. I have search scotlandspeople website for birth certificate information on the married male relative aged 21 with no trace but all other records for him in Huddersfield list him born in Lanark Scotland including workhouse records and his marriage certificate steers to this being correct. Unfortunately the surname Todd is relatively common as is his mothers, Mary Wilson which does not help. I have also tried to track the married couple through census records at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow with no success.

I am shortly to visit Edinburgh on business and can anyone advise on how to narrow my search to make best use of my limited time in Edinburgh Records Office or what if any pre research could be done on the web. I am hoping to find Birth records of Thomas and then track his parents James and Mary. Any help would be appreciated
