thanks for your replies. I made the assumption that all certs were written out the same, but this was my first male death cert. perhaps I will get more information from the 1911 census once its released. lol.

Men aren't usually described as spouse of. Women tho are described as wife or widow of ... The informant of mens certs are a better clue altho sometimes its been another family menber who has reg the death ,doesnt mean the wife wasnt around tho.

Where and when was the death.........In England? None of my men are shown as husband of...or....widower of... but the woman tend to be shown with a relationship. Gwyn

I have at long last found my great grandfathers death and purchased his death cert, as I have been unable to find his marriage to my great grandmother, I was hoping it would tell me if she was still alive at his time of death, as other death certs have said 'husband of or widower of', but on this cert there is no mention of a spouse or former marriage, even though I know this cert is the correct one, as the occupation for him is the same as that on my nans birth cert and the informant was my nans sister. So does this mean that he was'nt married at the time of his death or maybe seperated or is this just something that varies from registration to registration. Thanks in advance Tracie.
