I know legal adoptions came into being mid 1920's, but can someone tell me if the person was adopted before then ie 1910, when they got married would they have used their birth name or adopted name. I have the birth cert for the person in question, but on the electoral reg when this person was 21 they used the surname of the family that brought them up so am wondering which surname would have been legal when they got married. I hope this makes sense. Thanks Liz

They may have taken on the new family's name and would be able to use it for marriage, I think, as long as it was done openly and not to deceive. On the otherhand, if they knew their birth name they could have used that. As the electoral lists show them with the new surname, I would hunt using that name first. Gwyn

Gwyn Thanks for your reply, have searched under 'new' surname with no luck so will have to look under original surname. Liz

Do you know who they married? If so, you could hunt using that name, keeping a lookout for either of the 'adoptee's surnames as a match. Gwyn

Was the death after 1984...It will be easier to search if it was? I have a similar problem. I have a birthdate, death date and area and 3 given names....but no surname....not easy. Gwyn

Gwyn No it was in 1967 - its driving me nuts!!!!!!!!!!!. I wouldn't mind but its my husbands tree I am doing now and none of the family knew this person was ' adopted ' - can't even find any connection to this family as to why the child was brought up by them. The mother didn't register the child til it was 6 weeks old. Don't know if that is relevant. Liz

Oh...shame about the year. Before 1969 birthdates don't show on the death index...only on the certificates. There must be a way round this ... The child is 'attached' rather than a direct relative then? Were there any children of the 'adoptees's' marriage? Gwyn

He would have been allowed to marry in his 'adoptive' name or in the name he was 'known as'. There is every chance the marriage would have been registered in both his 'adoptive/known as' name and his birth name. This happened to a member of my family. Cheers Gerry
