Thank you all for your help. You have all given me some 'possibles' to look into. I think I will get Esther's marriage certificate and death certificate and see what happens. Marion, I will look for a William and Esther marriage. Thanks again. Susan

Have you looked for a marriage for her to a William between 1871-1883 under the name Maidment? Cant see anything on IGI etc Marion

SueMaid Report 25 Jun 2007 13:53

Bingo, Angela!! That would account for her not being with her family on the 1871 census. Silly thing is, we are always having our name Maidman mispelt as Maidment. Thank you so much. Susan

K, thank you for that, another piece in the puzzle. Marion, she is on the '51 and '61 census returns as Maidman but I can't find her on the '71 census as either Maidman or Paterson. Susan

Have you found her on earlier census? You might get a clue there. Marion

Presumably this is her death and the reason she isn't on a later census Deaths Sep 1889 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paterson Esther Ann 43 W. Ham 4a 102

I didn't think to look for a death for William. She still married James in her maiden name but I wonder if she perhaps wasn't married to William but (gasp!!) living in sin. If he died in 1882 she could have then married James (William's brother?) in 1883. Shirley, I think I will get that marriage certificate. Susan

Marion, I thought of that too. So far I can't find a marriage for her to William but I will keep looking. I only just received the death certificate and I already have more questions than answers! Susan

There is a death for William Burt Paterson 1882 Q2 at West Ham age 35. Maybe James was a relative who she then married? Chris

Can only suggest getting that marriage cert have looked on the census and she was in her 30,s The marriage entry ceratinly looks like her on Freebmd. Was wondering if she remarried but couldnt see a death for william.

Maybe she was married before...to William. Marion

I haven't found another Esther Ann Maidman and she may have been living in London at the time of her marriage. Susan

Esther's maiden name was Maidman. Susan

Shirley, I don't have her marriage certificate. The marriage entry was on FreeBMD and Ancestry. She could have lied about being married on her father's death cert. and on the 1881 census but that still doesn't explain why her husband's name is William on the census and James Edward on the marriage entry. Susan

well i would think the marriage cert isnt the right one if she was marrried on her dads death cert of 1880 and her address is still the same on the 1881 census. That marriage too took place in Bethnal Green reg area a not west ham

I have just received my hubby's 2 x great grandfather's death certificate, he died in 1880. The informant is his daughter Esther Paterson. Great, so now I can find out who she married. I look at the 1881 Census and there she is with her husband William. They are living in Forest Gate, West Ham. Same address as on the death certificate. Wonderful!! I look up her marriage and there she is. She married James Edward Paterson in 1883!! So who is William? And why is her name Paterson on her father's 1880 death certificate? Any thoughts are much appreciated. Susan
