I have a William Rowlands born Guilsfield Montgomeryshire 1821. Enlisted Wolverhampton in 1840 age 17yrs 9 months into the 38th Regiment. His army record give him in service from 17 Mar 1841(18th birthday?) to 23 Sep 1841 so he should be with his regiment on the 1841 census. But how do I find his regiment anyone any ideas where it was based? (he didn`t go abroad til 1842). We had previously presumed he was the William Rowland at Guilsfield on the 1841 census, but he can`t be.... Thanks Neil

Is he not listed via his name?

It says he joined the 38th regiment, I`m presuming it was the 38th(1st staffordshire) regiment of foot, but am not certain as it only says 38th in the paperwork . I`ve looked at all the William Rowlands listed on ancestry but none of them are at military establishments so he could be mistranscribed.

The regiment was based at Gibraltar at that time. http://regiments.org/deploy/uk/reg-inf/038-1.htm

Thanks for that Paul, but.. His service record states he was only abroad from March 1842 to 1849. As a newbee Soldier (march 1841) would he have been in Gibraltar in June 1841? Neil

Muster rolls for the Regiment for the appropriate date (at National Archives) would confirm where he was.

Hi thanks for all the info. Yes I do have him on all the census, we thought we had him on the 1841 until yesterday morning... Thanks again, Neil

CORRECTION!... In October 1841 the regiment was stationed to the island of Corfu where they remained for some time until March of 1843, when they where then transferred to Gibraltar.

Paul do you know where they might have been in June 1841 at the time of the census? Where are you finding your info from? Neil
