What was the legal minimum age for marriage in the 1800's? I'm look for a possible marriage for my g.grandfather's sister (Eleanor Jones b. 1872) and I have found one in Mar 1888 (albeit without the grooms name so I would have to apply for a cert). Is it possible she was married at 16? |

Up until 1926 the legal age for girls was 12 years and boys 14 years, although it was not very common. Jennifer |

It was 12 for girls and 14 for boys .with parental consent. I have a grt grt gran who married in 1870 aged 15 and 8 months.(cert says 16 but i have her birth cert so know she wasnt yet 16) groom was 20. Shirley |

Blimey! So it could be her then? Why could it be that the grooms name hasn't been transcribed? (Mile End Mar 1888 1c 644) |

I checked on ancestry.com as well. Put in the volume and page no and only got three names. I've connected the other two names together in the 1891 census, so her spouse is the missing name... No other way to find it, I don't suppose (apart from ordering a cert?) |

Angela now in Wilts (not North Devon) | Report | 27 Jun 2007 10:49 |
Have you tried looking for Eleanor (no surname) in the 1891 census, with her birth year & birthplace? You could then cross-reference with the actual images on Ancestry for the possible husband's name. (if you see what I mean!) A bit arduous but might save you £7. What were her birthplace/date? Angela Sorry, just realised you've posted the date! |

That's very lateral thinking.... I'm onto it. :-) |
