Just a thought - which might complicate things - My nan was married to my grandad in Portsmouth. All of there children (8 of them i think) where also born there. My Nan was a vey private person and did not talk ever about her life. If she fell pregnant from her first husband - and moved to Portsmouth whilst pregnant - i could even be lookin for a Brown born in Portsmouth - is this possible do you think or am i clutching at straws? |

sorry - i dont think i was being very clear. My nan is Clara Agnus Brown she married in 1940 a Benjamin William Ferrett who is my grandfather, they are now both deceased nan in 1985 - grandad in 1980. My nan - Clara Agnus Brown married George William Norman - in 1932 - to this marriage i know a child was born - i have no name - no dob - no sex even. My nan married in the Pancras district - edmonton - if this means anything to anybody - The first child to her second marriage (Ferrett) was born in December 1936 - a Bejamin Ferrett - although they did not marry til nearly 4 years later ?i felt this was important to tell you as it narrows down a time scale looking for the first child. - obviously because i now know she was still married. I want to find her very first child - who would be my auntie/Uncle - and obviously my mum's brother or sister. I have narrowed it down to 5 on the birth register. The only one born in London in Edmonton was a Patricia in first quater of 1933. But contacted her and it is the wrong one. I just need some direction - and desperate help - thanks to all of you for help so far x |

Karen, Both marriages did take place - they are both in the indexes, and the second one has the bride down as Brown or Norman. There was also a divorce as the second marriage certificate has 'previous marriage disolved' on it, so proof would have to have been shown. Got this information in a pm from Melissa. Kath. x |

Are you certain the child survived? Could it have been stillborn, in which case it wouldn't be on the normal birth register. As for divorce, it depends on whether the man or woman obtained the divorce. I think the grounds for a woman to get a divorce in those days had to be either her husband's adultery or cruelty. Unless George NORMAN also went to register his child, a baby born before the marriage is likely to be registered with the mother's surname.....but if George was there it could have been NORMAN. In theory, 2 children could have been born in 1936, ....I have known someone who had 2 children close together like this. Gwyn |

Very new to this - my grandmother a clara agnus brown b1912 married a george william norman in 1932. I have found this, i know there was a child born to this marriage, but cant find him/her anywhere? If the child was born before they were married would it be in the name of Brown or Norman? I know that it must of been born before the end of 1935, as she had another child in december 1936. She remarried in 1940 to a benjamin Ferrett. Also i know it was hard to get divorced then, what would have to be the grounds. I know my Nan left this child in London, but who with and why we dont know. Any Help?... |
