Elizabeth you have the old maps I have! Kenneth is right they are on multi maps so housing must have been built somewhere between 1896 and 1904 when our family records kick in. Thank you both for suggestions. |

Re. the date of 1906 - coincidentally I found this: http://www.hants.gov.uk/hchs/portstns.html Scroll down to Eastney Police station - it looks as though the road existed then, and was still being developed. Hope this helps. |

Hi Chris, I have three old maps of Portsmouth district - Central Portsmouth 1896, Portsea 1896 and Portsmouth North End 1896. Essex Road doesn't appear on any on them, but after googling I can see that it is to the east of the railway line that curves north at the bottom of the map for Central Portsmouth (Fratton Station), and is therefore off this map. You could try contacting Portsmouth Record Office - they were very helpful when my mother contacted them re. family history. |

Thank you I will have a look - so many areas there disappeared in the Blitz. |

Looking at Multi-map, there is an Essex road today & the aerial view shows houses which appear to have been built for some time. Ken |

Was there an Essex Road? Have an old map of 1896 and although have Sussex/Glouscester/Hampshire etc no Essex but then there was a lot of building still to come. Just wondered if there was or if this was yet again another Vicar's error. Thank you |
