Help Needed With Amended Marriage Certificate

I recieved my husbands grandparents wedding certificate today and it has greatly confused me. They were married on 22nd July, 1924 (which was crossed out from 21st July) All the information is perfectly normal, except when you come to the father of the brides name and surname, it just has a line, and also through his occupation. Next to the entry is written the following: Two J.C.M In Entry No.2 Col 2, before 'Clara Maud Honybon' read 'Clara Honebone Otherwise' Col. 7 for 'Honybon' read 'Walter Honebone' and for his occupation in Col. 8, read 'General Labourer'. Corrected on the 23rd day of August, 1924 by me, Thos C Morris, Registrar in the presence of A R West and Clara West, the parties married. Can anyone enlighten to or am I just being dumb? Why would you change your name and father a month after your wedding? I am greatly confused by this, I have never seen a wedding certificate that has been amended like this. Any help would be greatly recieved. Christine

I would think you really need her birth cert to clear this up. Reg

seems like the registrar made a right !! up of the cert. he has amended the date at the time of marriage, I would think then later the married couple have gone back to the registrar and told him there were other things wrong on it such as her name and he hadnt put her dads name on it. the later amendments have to be done by a journal entry which would have its ref nos and this would be written by the amendents so the journal could be found . would guess the correction journal would be signed a witnessed by all parties

It sounds to me as if they didn't realise at first that the surname had been spelt wrongly so went back to get it amended. How old were they when they married? Could they have been under 21 and the marriage was without parental consent so they just lied about her not having a father? Then when the parents found out, they went back to have her father's name added. Were the witnesses family members or not? I think where it says Two JCM it will actually be Two TCM. This will mean it is the registrar's second mistake on the page and the TCM are his initials. Kath. x

funnily enough the husband was 24 but the wife was only 19, and pregnant by my calculations, but instead of the father being added, it looks like he was taken of the register. Also, they had 4 sons, and every listing of each birth has a different spelling of the mother's maiden name, Honybon, Hunybon, Honebone and Honbone, I am just wondering if there is something to hide here or they were perhaps illiterate and could not spell the name...

Did they sign the marriage certificate or does it say 'her mark' with a X next to it. Kath. x

It has both of their signatures but they look like theyre written by the same person... all very strange

They would be written by the same person if you got the certificate from the GRO, because their copy is a transcribed copy of the original. If it doesn't say the name and then 'Her Mark' with an X after it, then they did sign their own names at the time. Kath. x
