Dear Lindsey Have you tried the Family History in India site - www(.)fibis(.)org - remove brackets. You can search by surname and they may be able to point you in the right direction. Best of luck Maria

Thanks for the tip Lynne (1900 Police India!) but hit a brick wall have to go to the British Library to look at records!! Any other tips for finding birth records or emmigration records to India, have been to ancestorsonboard and most of the records only have surnames, so there is no way of knowing if that is your ancestor! Bernice has tried to look up Melling in findmypast records but could not find anything. My father was born in Calcutta but we have no birth cert. his father was also born Calcutta and joined Indian army. His father was British born policeman and might have gone 1908 on SS Persia - name Thomas Richard Melling birth - 1882 possibly born Manchester Lancs. Please any info welcomed - Lindsey
