My family originates from the Islington/Kensington areas of Middlesex and I would really like to go to London to the Family Records Centre and perhaps some of the other record centres close by to try and trace my family back before the censuses and and gain as much info as I can about my past rellies. I am planning to go and spend a couple of days there to get the most of my visit. Can anybody experienced person advise me what they think would best way to make the most of my time, and the best places to visit and any other advice tips or hints. Thank you Martin

Well the Family Record Centre is a good start for BMD,s .census etc and about two minutes walk across from there is The London Metroplotan Archives that has parish records etc. I think your Islington ones might be there but would check the website and maybe give them a .call I found the staff there very helpful

At the risk of banging on about libraries - do check the collections at Islington & Kensington. You will find old maps, photographs of specific roads/buildings, electoral registers etc., as well as a wealth of local knowledge & information. It was only by visiting a Local Studies library that I solved a problem I had been chewing over for a long time. And - whatever you do, keep a note of where you found everything and record all the available information - saving yourself a trip back to verify something! Good Luck. Jackie

I went to the Family Record Centre last Thursday and picked up a good information leaflet. It is called Camden and Islington Family History Map. There is a website listed on it www.archiveawareness.com. I don't know if you can get a copy of this on line. Good luck I had a really good day there and found out alot that I could not find on the Internet.

i must recommend Kensington library, they have some great stuff and are very helpful, if you google them and contact them in advance by email they will let you know what they have and what may be of interest to you

Martin, The LMA has many London parish registers and you can see the originals on microfilm thus avoiding the transcription errors of others (e.g. the IGI). However, the LMA is not open every Saturday so you will need to check if you are planning to include the weekend. Peter
