Hide living rellies

With the glitches in GR, i have decided to hide all my living relatives. I am worried about data protection, and it would be all to easy for someone to steal your identity, not that mine is worth stealing. But everything is in the tree that someone would need to know, ie. mothers maiden name etc. Just something to be aware of. Carol

I, like many on GR, don't put living people on my GR tree - not even my own children. My full tree is on Family Tree Maker. Before I create a GED for upload to GR, I take a copy and then remove all living people, except me, from my tree. My Mum's alive, but her name becomes Living. My sister , husband and my children are not there. I also make sure that My entry is pared down to the bare minimum - a year and place of birth is sufficient. It takes a while to do this, but as I only refresh my GR tree a couple of times a year; I think it's worth the effort. Lin

I've done this too, so that all my living relatives just appeared as 'living' on GR. The only problem was that my PC completely crashed and had to be re-configured meaning that I lost all the information from my Legacy program. Luckily I was able to transfer all the info back from GR to Legacy once everything was back up and running, but I didn't have access to any of the living people! With my own immediate family, it was easy to fill in the gaps, but I have connections with other people on here who have given me info and it was their living rellies it was difficult to get back again. So, I guess the moral of the story is not to let your computer crash (easier said than done), or at least keep a back up completely separate from the main record, as you can't rely on GR if you've changed everyone to Living!

I too lost my PC last summer. fortunately, I backup data weekly to an external hard drive, so lost about 2 days work. External hard-drives are pretty cheap and well worth having for a speedy peace-of-mind backup. You just plug it into a USB on FireWire socket on your PC and then use it like Memory Stick. Lin
