Don't get hung up on searching using his surname. Surnames can be changed, accidentally by the enumerator or deliberately. Surnames can be badly mis-spelt! Try using his christian name, year of birth (+/- 2 or 5 years) and county of birth. Be prepared to search through several (or many) boys with the same christian name and approximate age ................... but I have great success using this method to find 'missing' people.

Mary Emma married a Joseph Stringer in 1898. She was living with her husband and two children in 1901. No Albert. Surely if he was in a childrens home, he would still be called by his birth name??? After all he was using this in 1901... Im soo sonfused!! Clare

I found my Grandfather in 1901 living with his Grandmother under her surname so that might be worth a try. His mother was also away as a servant.

I have just received the birth certificate for my g grandfather (great excitement - until I opened it and then went a-looking). He was born Albert Priestman on 15 Jan 1887 to one Mary Emma Priestman. No father recorded. Address 31 Broughton Road, Salford. I found him on the 1901 census - age 14 - lodging and working as an errand boy. Cannot find him on the 1891 census. Mother was working as a servant at this time (hasnt got 4 year old Albert with her). 2 questions. 1. Can i trace what type of establishment 31 Broughton road was (dont think it is the family home) and 2. How can I find him in 1891???? Many thanks, Clare x
